A project to help young entrepreneurs

I have always believed in volunteering, not only as an opportunity to help others but also as an opportunity for personal growth.

For this reason I joined Youth Co:Lab, an organization created in the context of the United Nations Development Program (United Nations Development Programme) which aims at carrying out initiatives shared among the countries of the whole Asia Pacific region.

Specifically, Youth Co:Lab aims at providing support to young entrepreneurs and startups who carry out projects aimed at achieving sustainable development goals.

In this context, I proposed myself for tutoring and coaching, and was put in contact with a young entrepreneur from the Fiji Islands who invented a revolutionary system of sustainable agriculture.

Sustainable agriculture in the Fiji Islands

The young entrepreneur Rinesh Sharma had an interesting story: after studying in India, he turned his back on safer career opportunities to return to his home country and help his fellow countrymen.

Fiji is an archipelago made up of over 300 islands, most of which are small in size. One of the main problems for the inhabitants of these islands is the difficulty in having a varied diet, plus all the health risks that derive from this. To help solve this problem, the young engineer has developed a hydroponic farming system, completely powered by solar energy, which allows the recovery of coconut shells and other waste materials to grow a greater variety of fruit and vegetables.

I helped Rinesh Sharma write the business plan of his project for a draft proposal in order to apply for a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for which we are awaiting a response. The feasibility study could also be used to participate in a USAID call.

An experience that continues

My experience in the United Nations volunteer projects is far from over, but I can already say that I am satisfied! I met talented people, I was able to see the problems and opportunities of young companies on the other side of the world, and I was able to enrich myself with new perspectives.

I was also able to put my skills to good use in a project aimed at sustainable development, which is a theme that I’m finding myself more and more involved and interested in.
